Good leadership is a perspective, not a position.

Tools, frameworks, and facilitation for solo practitioners and small teams.

About the Balcony Guild

I built The Balcony Guild for practitioners who know what they're doing but work in places where nobody quite knows what to do with them. I was one of them. Under-resourced and misunderstood, I kept explaining it harder and it kept not working. The problem wasn't technical. It needed a different approach, one that made the work visible, aligned it with expectations, and built shared understanding. When I discovered adaptive leadership, everything changed. The tools were made to help practitioners do the same: get above the noise, see clearly, and lead with confidence and purpose no matter where they land on the org chart.

High Ground: Cards for Leading Differently for Emergency Managers

For emergency managers working solo or in small teams, who are often under-resourced, sometimes undervalued, always essential, and navigating the space between technical response and the harder work of leading people, systems, and change. Grounded in the adaptive leadership framework of Ronald Heifetz, Marty Linsky, and Alexander Grashow, these cards help you diagnose what's really driving the problem, mobilize partners without formal authority, set boundaries that protect the mission, and reflect on the patterns and beliefs that shape how you lead.

Emergency management pulls you in constantly. The flood is where you are in the chaos: weather alerts, EOC activations, grant deadlines, partner calls. When you're in it, it's hard to see patterns or understand what's really driving the problem. High ground is where everything can come into focus. Where you see what's really happening, and choose your next move deliberately.

This deck is for those moments.

63 cards. One framework. Countless adaptive moves.

The Observation Deck: Cards for Leading Differently for Anyone Leading from Where They Are

Release Date: August 1, 2026

For solo practitioners, departments of one, and anyone navigating complex organizations without a simple path forward or leading without all the authority or resources they need. Grounded in the adaptive leadership framework of Ronald Heifetz, Marty Linsky, and Alexander Grashow, these cards help you name what's really happening, engage others in the work, know yourself well enough to lead honestly, and find your footing before you act.

You're in it constantly. The dance floor is where you're caught up in the lights and sounds, able to see only what's right in front of you: emails, meetings, projects, competing priorities, and everyone needing something from you. From there, it's hard to see patterns or understand what's really driving the problem. On the observation deck, everything comes into focus. You see what's really happening and choose your next move deliberately.

This deck is for those moments.

64 cards. One framework. Countless adaptive moves.
